Steve & Farah Claim WP Titles

Steve Coppinger and Farah Sterne overcame Jesse Engelbrecht and Karen vd Westhuizen in their respective finals of the WP Open 2009. The event was well subscribed and very well organised. MEN'S DRAW                                                 WOMEN'S DRAW

The Semi finals of the tournament were very exciting. The match of the tournament was between Steve and Clinton Leeuw where Clinton managed to haul back a 2-0 deficit to force a deciding game. The crowd got heavily involved and often shouted encouragement during the rallies for the players to make that extra effort to retrieve the ball. Steve managed to hang on in the 5th after a slight disruption due to Clinton's knee bleeding and a tight back hand drive sealed the win and a spot in the final.

Jesse got off to a good start against Rodney and held on well after that. Rod was trying to force the pace a lot and Jesse seemed to be able to pick him off when the loose ball came. Rod then put a big effort into the 3rd game and was rewarded with the game and the momentum was with the experienced campaigner heading into the fourth. The 4th was tight all the way up and in the end it was thanks to a couple of forehand volleys that hit the tin off Rodney's racquet that Jesse was through to the final.

In the girls matches Karen van der Westhuizen was very determined to dominate the match against her younger opponent Milnay Louw. Karen seemed to boss Milnay around the court and was in control of preceedings for the most part of the match. Milnay, slightly off the pace will be disappointed not to have been able to avenge her defeat to Karen in the WP Closed earlier in the season.

Farah was able to manoevre past Sasha West with some crisp shot making and determined squash setting up her final with Karen on Friday.
